What is the best time of day for outdoor portraits?
For an individual portrait session, choose clothing that reflects your personality while complementing your skin tone. Solid colors or subtle patterns work best, as they keep the focus on your face. A well-fitted top, such as a tailored blouse or a classic button-down shirt, paired with neutral trousers or a skirt, creates a timeless look. Men look great in structured collared shirts like polos, button up shirts, or blazers. Women look great with light mascara and lipstick to help their features stand out better in the photo. Accessories like a simple necklace or a watch can add a touch of elegance without overpowering the portrait.
For couple portraits, aim for coordinated outfits that harmonize without matching exactly; think complementary colors or shades within the same color palette like blues, browns, khakis, greens, and white or cream.
Family portraits benefit from a cohesive color scheme that unifies the group without appearing too matchy; earthy tones, blue, and white can work beautifully. Avoid logos or busy patterns. Coordinating outfits create a balanced and aesthetically pleasing family portrait. When in doubt khaki and black pants or classic jeans can be paired with shades of blue or green.
While I don't photograph all-day weddings, I will photograph micro-weddings and elopements for a session time of around three hours or less. Please send me a message if you have any questions about your specific event.

I shoot on a Nikon Z5 II full frame camera with NiKKOR Z prime 35mm and 85mm f/1.8 S lenses.
The golden hour, which occurs shortly after sunrise or before sunset, is ideal for outdoor portraits. The soft, warm light during these times creates beautiful, flattering photographs.
